BIARRITZ
Biarritz is a city on the Atlantic Coast in the south west of France. It
belongs to the Basque land and in the past it was a humble little bay that
became the queen of beaches in Spain when Napoleon III 's wife decided to spend
a time in a spa. The married couple decided then to have a residence in
Biarritz, called Ville Eugenie and therefore every year the aristocracy would
visit the city at a point that around ten thousand tourists from all over the
world came to enjoy the pleasure of the climate and the famous spa. Well known
celebrities like writers, artists, English aristocrats spent their holidays at
the spa and Edward VII had his own residence that later on would become the
Hotel du Palais
Biarritz is also a wave surfing center, and I known as one of the best place
to surf in Europe.
Two casinos attracted new tourists and during the 20s this city was a must
visited site. After the Second World War more parties were held there and famous
celebrities such as Bing Crosby, Rita Hayworth and Frank Sinatra chose Biarritz
as their holiday site. The first surfers in Spain debuted in Biarritz in 1957.
The 60s, 70s and 80s offered different attractions to the tourists and today the
city holds important cultural events, like the famous Festival of Cinema as well
as sport events. The city keeps its traditional elegance but instead of parties,
the beautiful beaches have taken the lead. It is in February especially that the
city becomes more quiet due to the change of weather and season. The calm,
peaceful and idyllic sensation given by this city makes it a great spot for
lovers to walk along the sand.
Playa Miramar, Playa Grande, Puerto Viejo and Playa Marbella y Milady are the
most beautiful beaches in Biarritz.
For a cultural visit, The Museum of Chocolate, the Museum of the Sea and the
Asiatica Museum are excellent places to discover. The Lighthouse was built in
1888 and gives extra beauty to the nights in Biarritz.
Biarritz located just few km from Bayonne, and can be a great place to start a
trip in the Pyrenees region.
You can get easily from Biarritz to Pau, and from there to the main tourist
sites in the Pyrenees mountains.
