If you and your family love exploring new places, discovering local culture
and learning a bit about history in beautiful surroundings then a trip to
Tuscany will certainly tick all the right boxes.
There are numerous picturesque villages in the region but one that may
particularly appeal is Casole d'Elsa.
Situated on top of a ridge just over 600 m above sea level, you will be
rewarded with panoramic views across the countryside and the river valley below
if you decide to stay in a family villa in Italy here.
Located in the heart of Tuscany in the province of Siena, it is the ideal
place to spend a bit of time if you want to get out and about while on
holiday.
There are numerous trails that you can follow - either on foot or by bike -
giving you the opportunity to fully explore the pretty countryside and the
valley. You may even be able to enjoy a walk along the edge of the River
Elsa.
Back in the village, you will not be short of things to see and do during
your stay.
A settlement has been recorded at Casole d'Elsa since the 13th century and
the village's rich history is easy to see wherever you go.
The ancient brick buildings give it a distinctly rustic feel and you will be
able to see some of the walls that originally surrounded the village if you head
to its western side.
There are numerous places of interest in the area that you can explore,
including a church that dates back to the 12th century and the Museum of Sacred
Art, which boasts an impressive collection of religious artefacts and artwork,
some of which date back hundreds of years.
One place that you should make time to visit is the Church of San Niccolo,
which was established in the 14th century and has numerous attractions within
its walls.
Although it is only a small place of worship, you are sure to be impressed by
the artwork and frescos that decorate its walls, with pieces dating to between
the 14th and 17th centuries.
