Discover Huatulco's 36 Beaches and 9 Bays

Nestled on the rugged coast of southern Oaxaca lies one of Mexico's best-kept secrets. Bahias de Huatulco, known locally as Huatulco, is a series of nine sheltered bays holding 36 stunning white sand beaches. While up the coast the pounding surf makes it difficult for those without surf boards to enjoy the water, the waters of Huatulco are always calm and mild due to the protection of the bays. A road trip to Huatulco will take you on some of Mexico's most scenic roads, and land you in one of its most pristine and beautiful beach destinations.

Due to its Green Globe Designation, nature is preserved and unspoiled on the land and sea. Development is restricted here due to the ecological designation. The Mexican government agency Fonatur has invested $800 million U.S. dollars in order to ensure that the areas reserves and forests remain intact. Of the 52,000 acres in Huatulco, 40,000 are ecological reserves that cannot be developed. While there is plenty to keep tourists happy here, including excellent hotels and restaurants, Huatulco is not over developed like many of the beach towns on Oaxaca's coast.

There are many things to do and see while you are in Huatulco. Deep-sea fishing is a passion here, as the deep waters off the coast are home to popular sport fish including sailfish, marlin, snapper, tuna and Dorado. During the winter, from December to March, you can also witness migrating whales. The Oaxaca coast is also famous as a favorite nesting spot for giant sea turtles, and dolphins are often found frolicking in the waters just offshore. The best way to experience the marine life is by taking a sailing trip. Sailing tours will also allow you to snorkel in the crystal clear waters of some of Huatulco's most secluded bays. Other activities include horseback riding, rock climbing and playing golf in the Tangolunda golf course.

Driving to Huatulco from the states takes about three days depending on how you drive. If you want to take it slow and easy, you can stretch it out for longer. There are plenty of places to stop along the way. If you take it fast, you can make it in 2 days. There are toll roads the whole way down from the border to Oaxaca. From Oaxaca City, you will have to turn south through the mountains, and this last stretch can be slow going as the road is twisty and speed is impossible. However, at the end of that twisty mountain road lies the golden coast of Oaxaca, paradise found.

Planning a road trip to Huatulco, Mexico is easy. Remember you will want to get Mexican auto insurance for your vehicle in Mexico, which can be purchased online. You will also need to get a permit for your vehicle when you cross the border into Mexico. Since a permit is not required in the Free Zone, if you cross into Sonora you may miss the vehicle permit desk at the border and drive on. This is a big mistake because the border is the only place where you can get your permit. The cost for a vehicle permit is around $30. You are also required to leave a cash or credit card deposit, which ensures you will return your permit at the end of your stay in Mexico. If you return your permit within the allotted time on your visa (usually about 6 months) you will get your deposit returned. If not, expect heavy fines.

Huatulco is sure to impress even the most seasoned Mexico travelers. While Huatulco doesn't lack in first-rate traveler accommodations, it is minus the high-rise hotels and condominiums that have become all too common on Mexico beaches elsewhere. So get your car or RV tuned up, grab yourself a Mexican auto insurance policy, and head south to the beautiful Mexican state of Oaxaca!
